Kaplan University is a part of Kaplan Higher Education Corp., which is a part of Kaplan, Inc., a subsidiary of The Washington Post Company. Today, Kaplan comprises half of the Post Company’s revenue and is its fastest-growing division.
Purposes
To accomplish its mission, Kaplan University has established the following purposes:
- Provide academic programs that have been developed and assessed by faculty, staff, and members of educational, professional, and business communities.
- Provide intensive and comprehensive instruction using both onsite and online modes of delivery that strengthens student academic achievement.
- Instill in its students the value of lifelong learning by stimulating intellectual curiosity, creative and critical thinking, and awareness of culture and diversity.
- Plan and provide facilities and resources that respond to the needs of students, faculty, and staff.
- Assist students in developing professional attitudes, values, skills, and strategies that will foster success in their careers and in life.

Our History
As one of the world’s leading providers of lifelong education with operations around the globe, we have evolved well beyond our historic roots in test preparation and now serve students of all ages through a wide array of offerings. These include programs for kids and schools, post-secondary education, professional training, and more.
Kaplan University has been ahead of the curve responding to employment demands, employer needs, teaching methods, and the use of various educational resources since it was founded in 1937.*
* Kaplan University, formerly Kaplan College, Quest College, and American Institute of Commerce (AIC), was founded in 1937. AIC was purchased by Quest Education Corporation in November 1998 and in April 2000 changed its name to Quest College. Quest Education Corporation was purchased in July 2000 by Kaplan, Inc. In November 2000, the name of the College was changed to Kaplan College. In 2004, Kaplan College expanded its academic offerings to include master’s-level programs and became Kaplan University. Kaplan Higher Education Corporation and Kaplan, Inc. are dedicated to continuing the same excellent education for which AIC has always been known.
